About Curaçao
Curaçao is a Netherland Antilles island in the southern Caribbean Sea and the Dutch Caribbean region, about 65 km north of the Venezuelan coast. It is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Together with Aruba and Bonaire islands they form the ABC islands. Collectively, Curaçao and the other Dutch islands in the Caribbean are often called the Dutch Caribbean.
The official languages are Dutch, Papiamentu and English.However, Dutch is the sole language for all administration and legal matters. Most of Curaçao's population is able to converse in at least two of the languages of Papiamentu, Dutch, English, and Spanish.
Curaçao has a semi-arid climate with a dry season from January to September and a wet season from October to December.The temperatures are relatively constant with small differences throughout the year. The coolest month is January with an average temperature of 26.5 °C and the warmest month is September with an average temperature of 28.9 °C. Curaçao lies outside the hurricane belt.
The sea in Curaçao is warm enough to swim in throughout the year: the water temperature reaches a low of 26 °C in February and March and a high of 29 °C in September and October.
The historic centre of the capital, Willemstad is a UNESCO heritage since 1997. The two sides of the centre, Punda and Otrobanda are divided by the Saint Anna Bay. Willemstad is a place where culture, history and diverse cuisine meet.
In Punda town tourists can admire Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue which is the oldest continually used synagogue in the western hemisphere.
Curaçao is famous for the so-called Curaçao Liquor that is made from the rind of the island's oranges, and for celebrating one of the best-known Carnivals in the Caribbean.
A lot of guided walking tours are offered where there is a chance to admire the colorful buildings, which are trademarks of the island. Furthermore Willemstad is also a place where huge and stunning cruise ships dock.
Due to the rich diversity of the culture, several different type of restaurant can be found on the island, depending on the preferences.
