Save the oceans

Our role for the clean OCEANS

#Every Dive a Survey Dive

Data is what enables us, alongside our partners, to advocate for a return to a clean and healthy ocean.

It’s no secret that marine debris is a primary threat facing today's ocean, choking, suffocating, entangling and killing precious marine life and destroying ocean habitats. Although it’s believed that over 70% of marine debris that enters the ocean ends up on the seafloor, little quantitative information is available regarding the types and quantities of this rubbish. Dive Against Debris®, Project AWARE's flagship citizen science program, aims to fill this gap – providing quantitative data, and an accurate perspective about underwater marine debris, that policy-makers simply cannot ignore.

# Dive Against Debris

Don’t let your dives go to waste! Grab your mesh bag, scuba gear and data card to make #EveryDiveaSurveyDive and contribute to the #NextMillion2020 goal! Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris®, empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected.

Since the program’s launch in 2011, more than 50,000 divers have participated in Dive Against Debris in 114 countries around the world, reporting over 1 million pieces of trash. As the only underwater debris data collection program of its kind, Dive Against Debris both improves the health of ocean ecosystems through localized volunteer efforts and provides valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change.

Our next goal: Add our next million pieces of debris to the global Dive Against Debris dataset by the end of 2020 to mobilize local communities and continue to build evidence of the scale of the global marine debris crisis. Be part of the #NextMillion2020!
